Description
The Nikon Diaphot is an inverted phase contrast microscope developed for tissue culture and photomicrography applications. It features a Siedentopf-design binocular head built onto a die-cast body, inclined at 45 degrees with a single internal reflecting surface to reduce glare and maximize image contrast. A focusing Bertrand Lens is built into the binocular body for fast alignment of the phase annular ring. The stage sits slightly below the binocular head, allowing easy access to and viewing of the specimen area, with coaxial coarse and fine focusing controlling the nosepiece while the stage itself remains stationary. The optical design was built for the shortest, most efficient light path, with a turret assembly incorporating a focusable Bertrand lens, photomask reticle, and dark slide.
