Description:

The Ettan IPGphor II from GE Healthcare is the ideal option for obtaining perfectly resolved first dimensions of 2D gels. The manufacturer claims that the system provides ‘reproducibility, reliability, speed, accuracy, high protein loading capacity, and high throughput’, and in my experience, the system really stands up to their claim. To begin with, the system is very compact and can be housed on a tabletop in any corner of the lab. It is perfectly silent and occupies little space. The system requires an ambient, dust-free operating environment; however, we keep the instrument in a well air-conditioned room. The system contains gold-plated copper electrodes that provide the necessary contact to the 1D strips for carrying out isoelectric focusing. A very high voltage is applied between the electrodes and, therefore, caution should be used while handling the instrument. As a safety feature, the electrodes are automatically switched off when anyone opens the lid of the instrument.

How It Works

  • The Millipore Milli-Q Synthesis A-10 water purification system delivers type 1, ultrapure water for your applications thatÂ’s pyrogen and RNase free. Applications such as ELISA tests, electrophoresis gel make-up and serum-based cell and tissue culture media perpetration, affinity chromatography, and protein and nucleic acid isolation. The Synthesis system takes pretreated water (either through EDI, Reverse Osmosis, Distillation or Deionization, and pumps it through the Q-Guard cartridge, then passes the water under UV lights at two wavelengths, 185 and 254nm. Organic compounds are oxidized and bacteria is destroyed. The Quantum cartridge then filters out the trace ions and oxidation by products. Purified water is then sent through an ultrafiltration module, and finally through a filter membrane that removes any particles or bacteria greater than 0.22µm in size.
  • The Millipore Milli-q Synthesis A-10 includes a built in A-10 total organic carbon (TOC) monitor, high-precision resistivity meter, while providing complete monitoring of water quality throughout the process. As the process proceeds, the water quality and operation data is recorded in system memory. This Millipore water filter uses a backlit display to show resistivity and TOC Levels in addition to other system functions, for easy monitoring.
